What is Your Life?

1460919162Take a moment and think of five to ten things that would sum up your life. Where your time is spent, what your most prized possessions are, what is most important to you, ect.

Now take a minute and ask yourself how many of the things on this list and in your life have eternal value. In Luke 12:15 Jesus instructs, “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Our lives are not made up of how many things we can collect here on this earth, but rather they consist of what we do for eternity.

We read in Colossians 3:1-4 that we are to live our life with a love of heavenly things — things that have eternal value. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

We are instructed in Matthew 6:20, “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” We must ask ourselves the question then what treasures have we laid up in Heaven? What eternal difference is your life making?

If we do not guard ourselves we will fall into the trap of shortsightedness, living for only what we can see and gain in this lifetime with nothing to show for in eternity (I Corinthians 3:12-15).

Perhaps C.T. Studd summed it up best when he penned “Only one life twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last”
